COLOR Gardens
Mission
To teach about sustainable, organic gardening while building community, beautifying downtown Ventura and furthering the mission of COLOR by growing produce for local food pantries.
In early 2010 COLOR volunteers broke ground on COLOR Gardens, our community garden project at the corner of Poli & Chestnut in downtown Ventura. Originally our garden site was home to the Theodosia Burr Shepherd Gardens from the 1870s through the 1940s. Theodosia Burr Shepherd was a pioneer of the flower seed industry. We are thrilled to be able to turn the lot back into a garden. When we started, the garden site was a blighted, overgrown, scraggly vacant lot. COLOR volunteers cleaned out all the trash, cut back the overgrown shrubs, and pulled all the weeds. Then in March of 2010 we planted our first plants (see picture below). Between planting the first plants on March 25, 2010 and the time this site was updated (June 8, 2011), COLOR Gardens has donated 515 pounds of produce to local food pantries.
